Dyan's Arm Dibacle

In March Dyan, while attending a company party with our nieces fell and broke her arm pretty badly. She was racing our oldest niece Jayne through a Bounce House Obstacle Course and fell just right to seriously fracture her arm essentially breaking the bone into four pieces.(Side-note: The following pictures are not for the faint in heart.) She was taken to the emergency room and had surgery to place a metal plate and 11 screws in her arm to stabilize the bone and allow it to heal. Everything seemed to be going well and she seemed on the mend when we received more disturbing news. In June we found out that the bone had become infected and that it had not healed completely. The plate was removed, an external fixation device was placed on, and she received a PIC line through which she received doses of antibiotics three times a day for 6 weeks. Her body responded well to the medications and at the end of August she was able to have the fixator removed and we received the great news that her bone had healed and she would not need an additional surgery to put a plate back in. She is doing well and is working on getting her full range of motion back as well as learning how to handle residual pain. She is amazing and during the whole thing has been a real trooper. I am so grateful for her strength and her determination to work through this trial. She is definitely making a great argument for being the toughest Abbott in the family.
